JW, the polarizing filter works just like your sun glasses. It has the maximum effect when the sun is at a right angle to the lense. You have to turn the front ring of the filter to see the effects....

Circular polarizers are required for the autofocus mechanism to function properly in digital cameras. A UV filter may often minimize "haze" as well.
